Been playing around with stuff that’s a little more abstract, messier, free-er, looser.  This style is not my forte, but it’s been fun.  And it’s nice to switch out my pen for a paintbrush now and then…

A few more pretty little drawing/collages, and now I’m ready to move on to something else.  These have been fun, and it’s nice to have a group of pieces that comprise a sort of ‘series’, but they’re feeling a little cute-sy (case in point: see butterfly below), so for the next few sketches, look for something messier, free-er, and more abstract – might be time to time to pull out the fat sticks of charcoal and crack open my globby tubes of paint.

As good as this little ‘weekly sketching’ exercise has been for me in terms of getting me to draw/paint/collage more regularly, I’m finding it a little unfulfilling lately.  The fact that I have not established a consistent theme or style in my work bothers me.  I’m not going to do away with the exercise completely, but I’m looking for ways to morph my process a little bit this year.  Watch for changes – they might be subtle and completely unnoticeable, or they might come in the form of a total overhaul.  Not sure yet…  But stay tuned.

Just a few randoms…

I’ve had a hard time really getting into my sketchbook lately, and as a result, haven’t really loved anything I’ve put down on paper.  But an art teacher once told me that whether or not you’re happy with your pieces, it’s still vitally important to get in the habit of regularly making something, so I’m taking his advice and sticking with it.  Without further excuses, these are the latest…

I’ve felt rather uninspired lately, having to force myself to open my sketchbook.  But I’m coming to understand the value of just getting into the habit of making art – it’s better to produce something I’m not necessarily crazy about than to produce nothing at all.  And those moments always do eventually come when I touch a paintbrush to paper or draw a line in ink and think ‘nice!…’  So I forge on with this little exercise of weekly sketching.  These are the latest…

My sketchbook was sadly neglected through much of June, but I’ve picked it back up recently to flush out some of the subject matter that’s been floating around in this cluttered mind of mine…
